The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.
– Pablo Picasso
When I spoke recently at the Auckland Executive Club, the topic was \”ROCK your Wellbeing, ROCK your business!\”
The correlation between your mental, physical and relational wellbeing with your productivity and performance in the workplace is so strong. I know this not only from research, but from personal experience, having been through my own huge burn-out episode years ago, which completely changed so much of my perspective, understanding and behaviours. As a side note, this was not a pleasant time in my life and it is only now, years afterwards that I am speaking about the learnings I gleaned from going through it.
I believe that there is a 4th contributor however, that is rarely mentioned when we talk about wellbeing, and this is where my background as a music performer/ director and teacher comes into play. That is making time to feed your creative soul – be it playing music, painting, writing, singing, creating craft projects, taking photos….etc etc.
When we become \”too busy\” in our workplaces and schools, and dismiss the arts as being \”too frivolous, \”a \”waste of time,\” or \”unproductive,\” we ignore a part of our wellbeing that can\’t be filled by exercise, positive thinking or improved communication skills.
Hence, when I picked my somewhat dusty and neglected saxophone to play for the women at the end of my talk, I was reminded yet again how much music fills my soul. More so when women with tears in their eyes afterwards thanked me for ministering to theirs.
What can you do this week to feed your soul?
