Remember those really cool carousels that used to be the main feature at the Easter Show? The ones with elaborately painted horses and carriages that went round and round and round…… You know the type, and many of you know too that feeling of going round and round and round the diet carousel.
You jump from one pretty horse – or diet plan – to the next. Low carb, high fat, IIFYM, paleo, Atkins, points counting – you name it, and at some point or other, you and I have done it. Always in search of that elusive “holy grail” – the plan that will FINALLY work.
And guess what? You generally get some results for a while, then bam – you fall off the wagon.
Life happens, you self-sabotage, you simply can’t be arsed anymore.
Then you binge for a while, lick your wounds, beat yourself up some more, then search out the next pretty diet and jump back on that carousel and do it all over again.
Sound familiar?
Having witnessed this scenario in both my own life and many of my clients’ lives, I’m more convinced than ever that we need to learn to love ourselves, and not constantly operate from a place of guilt, self condemnation and failure.
After all, isn’t it time that we developed a new relationship with food where it becomes something that we enjoy and appreciate rather than something we fear, leading to an “all or nothing” scenario?
Where we exercise, not to “get skinny” but because we love the feeling of moving and getting stronger, and we CHOOSE to do it regularly, not because we are compelled to, but because we WANT to?
What are your thoughts? Is it time to start a revolution? Where we stop basing our self worth on a number on a scale and instead love ourselves enough to treat our bodies well?
I say we do it. Let’s get off that diet carousel and start loving ourselves as we are – right now.
