Three reasons why you should declutter at midlife
1. Decluttering at midlife helps you let go of the past and move on to the future.
As I often say, the midlife years can feel like you are sitting in the front seat of a rollercoaster. You have no control over the twists and turns, other than to hang on tight and choose whether to laugh or scream – or maybe both – as you hurtle around the tracks.
Amongst the various life moments experienced on that ride, are significant and poignant events such as empty nest, loss of friendships, passing of family members, separation, divorce, downsizing, chronic illness and more. All of these events have the potential to help accumulate more clutter in your life – be it physical, digital or emotional as do many of the happy life events too: becoming a grandparent, travelling the world, forging new friendships, remarriage, moving to a new town, starting a hobby or launching a side-hustle.
It can be so easy to get stuck in the emotions of the past. We women often feel obliged to hold on to mementos such as china, furniture and photographs from our parents, as well as gifts, art and belongings from our children. Doing so creates clutter that holds us back from stepping fully into our next season of life, and letting go – carefully as these forms of clutter have so much emotion attached to them – can be incredibly freeing.
2. When you declutter at midlife, you are also decluttering your mind and decluttering your life.
In all of my 21 Hacks books, I talk about how clutter can lead to sensory overwhelm – which in turn leaves you feeling stuck, procrastinating and basically feeling “blah.” Be it visual clutter, audio clutter or even the negative chatter between your ears – your senses are constantly gathering information and sending it to the brain which is working overtime trying to process everything.
Letting go of the clutter that surrounds you will help calm your busy brain down, and you will be surprised at what creative thoughts bubble to the surface when there is finally space for you to breathe and dream.
3. Decluttering at midlife can help you focus on what’s really important to you.
Similar to point 2, when you clear the clutter, you create space – both in your physical environment and in your brain – and if you are someone who struggles with focus, understanding this will change your life!
When your brain no longer needs to process information about the clutter on your desk, on your floor or all over your desktop – you are able to focus far more effectively on the task you are supposed to be working on. In fact you can easily put some decluttering “rules” in place right away to help you focus, such as turning your phone on silent and placing it face down so you your focus is not broken by audio or visual clutter while you work.
When you are embarking on a midlife reinvention which includes you learning new things, the ability to focus is essential, and decluttering will help you get there.
So there you have it: 3 reasons why you should Declutter at Midlife! As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts: do you agree that decluttering is an important part of your midlife journey, and can you think of some other reasons why you think it is important? Let me know in the comments below!

We recently downsized and I was so anxious about missing my “stuff.” It’s incredible to me how much I don’t need and how much I don’t miss. Life is much better without being tied to things! Thanks for the reminder!
We’ve just moved too – it’s a great way of “forcing” you to re-assess your belongings and yes, amazing how much stuff we actually don’t need!
Hi Cat!
Oh, I go a bit nuts when there is clutter! I suppose I came from the opposite end of the spectrum, which was my dad threw everything away. Now my hubby keeps everything. I know there is a happy medium. There is a sense of relief when you let things go, it feels so good just to clear it out!
Enjoy your week!

Hi Jessica – it’s great that you and your hubby have found balance! I’ve met some couples whose clutter tolerance level is so different that there is constant friction.
I’ve always been a huge fan of the post-December declutter. It’s a good habit to get into during snowy winter months so everything is fresh for the spring!
I hear you, except for me down here in New Zealand, it’s around August when I like to do a clear out, ready for spring in September. I do like doing a quick freshen up at the end of December too though, ready for the New Year.
I enjoyed reading, thank you for sharing. Great post!
Thanks for reading Chantal!
This is so on target…am helping a friend launch expansion of her organizing business .
Thank you and all the best to your friend!
This is so good, Cat! I am simplifying my life in several areas. It’s so freeing! I went from 9 boxes of Christmas stuff down to 3! It feels so good! I Love your blog and will be back for more. XO, Christine
Thanks Christine and I hear you on the Christmas stuff! I threw a few boxes out when we moved recently and have no clue why I had held on to them for so long!
Spot on!
Thank you! 🙂
This post is speaking directly to me today! No one would ever accuse me of a cluttered house. But, I do have a cluttered mind and neat cluttered office. Now, is the time for me to finish the clearing and make way for a clean start.
Thanks for the tips!
Rosemary
Oh I hear you about the cluttered mind and also the “neat cluttered office.” We get so adept at organising our over abundance of belongings, rather than actually clearing them. All the best for your clearing!
Just having moved from a 10,000 square foot home into a 1400 square foot condo I get it 🙂
Wow – I can imagine that the act of downsizing was both liberating and confronting at times!
